2020 Census Citizenship Question Decision

This week the U.S. Supreme Court decided several cases that will have a significant impact on the communities our YWCAs serve, including a key decision to block the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, for now. Read YWCA USA's statement in response to the Court’s decision on the 2020 Census citizenship question.

In addition, here are some helpful talking points about the decision from our partners at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights:

  • Democracy won. The Supreme Court ruled that the citizenship question cannot, for now, be added to the 2020 Census.
  • Given the unrelenting timetable, it seems unlikely that the citizenship question could be added.
  • The Commerce Department and the Census Bureau should respect the Supreme Court’s decision and immediately proceed with preparations for a 2020 Census that does not include the citizenship question.
  • This is an “all hands on deck” moment. We must all stand up for the representation and resources our communities deserve by participating in the 2020 Census.

We must do everything we can to ensure that every person in our communities is counted. So much is at stake, from vital funding for health care, safe roads, and schools, to our fair share of political representation. Take action now: take the pledge to participate in the 2020 Census, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.

For questions about the upcoming Census, please email YWCA USA's State Advocacy and Civic Engagement Manager Natalie Cone.

GOTV Starts Now

It’s never too early to gear up for GOTV — and National Voter Registration Day (September 24) and Election Day (November 5) are quickly approaching! Last year, 119 YWCAs engaged in GOTV activities, holding more than 100 events, registering over 1500 people, and mobilizing thousands more. Let’s build on our collective power and reach even more people this year! To learn more and start engaging in YWCA’s 2019 GOTV mobilization efforts, re-watch our recent public policy webinar and download the slides on the YWCA Intranet.

SHIFT An AMEND Together Conference

YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee is hosting the first-ever national conference on violence against women and healthy masculinity on September 9-10 in Nashville. Keynote and featured speakers include Time Magazine’s 2017 Person of the Year and “Silence Breaker” Terry Crews, survivor and activist Brenda Tracy, and YWCA USA CEO Alejandra Y. Castillo. SHIFT – An AMEND Together Conference will bring together business, civic, nonprofit, faith, and amateur and professional athletic leaders to learn about changing culture, healthy masculinity, and sexual assault and harassment prevention, as well as the latest updates on Title IX. As many of you know, AMEND Together is a YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee-based program aimed at changing culture by engaging and educating boys and men on healthy masculinity, respect, and violence prevention. NNEDV Economic Justice Summit 2019

On June 19-20, YWCA USA joined YWCA Central Virginia, YWCA Kauai County, and YWCA Union County in Houston, Texas, at the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV)’s third annual Economic Justice Summit. At this summit we discussed policies and strategies for addressing the multifaceted issue of economic justice for survivors of domestic violence. YWCA USA is proud to learn with and from amazing YWCA local leaders on improving economic security and justice for survivors.
