House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee
Earlier today, YWCA USA CEO Alejandra Y. Castillo testified before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship. The hearing, led by El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (D-TX), focused on conditions along the southern border and the violence aimed at immigrant communities.
The two-panel hearing was entitled Oversight of the Trump Administration’s Border Policies and the Relationship Between Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric and Domestic Terrorism, and was attended by Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO), and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX).
Castillo’s testimony addressed the interrelated issues of gun violence, racist rhetoric, misogyny and gender-based violence that lie at the heart of America’s surge in domestic terrorism.

On Wednesday, a fire at the YWCA Union County (NJ) caused significant damage to their main building. While they are working with their insurance company and believe insurance will cover most, if not all, of their costs, there were eight families residing at the facility who lost their personal belongings.
When asked what help was needed, YWCA Union County CEO, Jan Lilien, indicated VISA gift cards for their clients would be appreciated. If you are able to help, gift cards should be sent to Jan Lilien, YWCA Union County, 1131 East Jersey, Elizabeth, NJ 07201. |
