Our 2020 Stand Against Racism National Tele-Town Hall is just under a week away! We hope you will join us and our stellar line-up of women leaders in this discussion about racial justice and gender equity issues that have come to light as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, learn best practices and build skills for effective civic engagement amidst social distancing, and empower individuals nationwide for the work of racial justice. Be sure to share the details below with colleagues and others in your network.

Earlier this week, YWCA USA joined with other leading nonprofit organizations and Members of Congress for a press call to discuss the impact COVID-19 has had on the nonprofit sector and to offer policy recommendations to Congress that should be included in future stimulus packages. Details from the call and a link to collective recommendations can be found below.

In response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19, YWCA USA will be participating in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity to take place on May 5, 2020. Below, you will find a toolkit with resources your association can use to share stories of the work we do every day and to drive a spike in generosity.

Join Us for the 2020 Stand Against Racism National Tele-Town Hall
Thursday, April 23, 2020, 3:00 – 4:45 p.m. ET

Voting rights, census participation, and civic engagement are, and have always been, essential to racial justice. As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts all aspects of life, it is also exacerbating the impact of systemic and structural racism on communities of color across health, education, justice, and economic sectors. In this moment, our collective efforts to secure full access at the ballot box, to ensure a fair and complete census count, and to stand against racism—whenever and wherever it happens—are more important than ever.

Join us for a national tele-town hall where we will:

  • Explore the issues with national leaders in the movement for racial justice and gender equity.
  • Learn best practices and build skills for effective civic engagement amidst social distancing.
  • Motivate and inspire our nationwide network for the work of racial justice.

In this critical moment for our nation, our collective efforts can root out injustice, transform institutions, and create a world that sees women, girls, and people of color the way we do: Equal. Powerful. Unstoppable.

Speakers include:

  • Alejandra Y. Castillo, CEO, YWCA USA
  • Cecile Richards, Co-chair, Supermajority
  • Vanita Gupta, President & CEO, Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights
  • Valerie Jarrett, Co-Chair, United State of Women & When We All Vote
  • Ai-Jen Poo, Director, National Domestic Workers Alliance
  • Virginia Kase, CEO, League of Women Voters
  • Melanie Campbell, President & CEO, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation
  • Becky Pringle, Vice President, NEA

YWCA staff, board members, clients/program participants, community partners, and local policy makers are encouraged to join. Register today!

Below are two additional ways that you can engage with us in this year's Stand Against Racism:

Leading Nonprofits Join Together to Highlight the Impact of COVID-19 on Funding, Staffing and Community Service
On Tuesday, YWCA USA joined with Goodwill, United Way, and Representatives Judy Chu (D-CA-27) and Gwen Moore (D-WI-4), for a press call to discuss the impact COVID-19 has had on funding, staffing, and community programming for the nonprofit sector, and offer policy recommendations to Congress on how to address the specific needs of the nonprofit sector. Charitable nonprofits employ more than 12 million Americans, play a critical role in our national economy, and are valued problem solvers for communities.

YWCA offers vital services, including providing emergency child care services to first responders and supporting survivors of domestic violence as the threat of abuse increases across the country. In local communities across the nation, Goodwill organizations are focusing their efforts on community relief and virtual training, including collecting donations of first aid supplies; providing vehicles, staffing, and other equipment to hospitals and food banks; collecting donations for food banks; providing smocks for healthcare workers; and providing job preparation skills and virtual career fairs online. United Way Worldwide is focused on helping vulnerable communities access food, shelter, and vital information needed to cope with the pandemic, in addition to operating the 211 non-emergency hotline, covering 95 percent of U.S. communities, which is seeing a 200 – 300 percent increase in call volume since the onset of the pandemic.

View this joint briefing paper for collective recommendations on how Congress can build on the CARES Act to help the nonprofit sector survive this pandemic.

From Sustainability to Survivability: Managing Uncertainty Amid Crisis Webinar Recording

Last week, YWCA USA hosted the From Sustainability to Survivability: Managing Uncertainty Amid Crisis webinar with Steve Zimmerman of Spectrum Nonprofit Group. For many YWCA leaders, thoughts today are not on sustainability but survivability and, as always, it is at these times that our constituents need us most. However, there are steps leaders can take to increase the likelihood of success amid these challenging times. Session objectives included understanding your cash position and assessing damage to your revenue stream, using a framework for strategic decision-making, and how to communicate with stakeholders.

If you weren’t able to join the webinar, you can use this link to watch the recording. Resources and templates presented during the webinar can be downloaded from the file pod.
