SUBJECT: Important 501c3 Guidance


Dear YWCA Leaders,

Given our history and mission as a women’s organization, some have expressed interest in being able to publicly celebrate and comment on the first-ever nomination of a woman presidential candidate by a major political party in the U.S. Our legal counsel expressed significant concerns about the fine lines and potential pitfalls that surround activities by 501(c)(3) organizations with respect to political campaigns. Counsel specifically advised against commenting in any way about this milestone prior to the election, and noted that such activity would be particularly risky in today’s environment.
