We are pleased to share the following YWCA USA updates.
Immigration Rally
We were proud to represent YWCA at Monday’s immigration rally in DC. See some of our signage and staff on ABC News, NY Daily News, and Buzzfeed. Help us keep the volume up on this issue by reminding Congress to pass a clean Dream Act now!
New Briefing Document: Gun Violence
YWCA is committed to ensuring that communities are safe places for women and girls to thrive. As headlines and research make clear, gun violence is a major threat to their health and safety. In light of recent events, as well as documented links between intimate partner violence and gun violence, YWCA USA has developed this new policy statement and recommendations, which will guide our advocacy moving forward. You may also be interested in joining a March for Our Lives event near you on March 24. Please contact cbeane@ywca.org with any questions.
Add Your Name: Letter in Support of Nonpartisanship
Please consider adding your association to the Community Letter in Support of Nonpartisanship! For more than 60 years, the Johnson Amendment has successfully protected charitable nonprofits, religious congregations, and foundations from being hounded by politicians, political operatives, and paid political consultants seeking political endorsements, financial contributions, and more. That provision is threatened now by legislation seeking to completely repeal or substantially weaken this longstanding protection in the law.
Opportunity for Young Women: World YWCA Team at the United Nations
World YWCA invites member associations of YWCA USA in the Greater New York City area to nominate young women to join a new team of World YWCA representatives to the United Nations. Women under 30 who are active in the YWCA movement, committed to YWCA values, interested in learning more about advocacy and international human rights and able to volunteer 10 – 12 days per year will be considered.
Applicants seeking endorsement by YWCA USA should send an email to Kelli Shewmaker at kshewmaker@ywca.org with the following materials by March 24: a one paragraph biography focusing on your global work, a 200-word letter of interest describing your motivation and why you would like to be a World YWCA representative, and a letter of support from the executive director or CEO of your local YWCA. If you applying as an executive director or CEO, then you can provide a letter of support from the chair of your board of directors. Contact Kelli with any questions.
Stand Against Racism: Register Your Participating Sites
Don’t forget to register for Stand Against Racism and register your partner events as well! Questions? Contact Danielle Marse-Kapr, communications and marketing director.
Week of Action for Dignity in Schools
Friday, March 16 through Thursday, March 22 is the week of action to protect the federal school discipline guidance, a critical tool that can help schools and districts reduce the use of practices that push students out of school (e.g. suspensions and expulsions) and prevent schools from disciplining in ways that discriminate against students of color. You can help support this effort by organizing one or more activities in your community to raise awareness of the need for these important protections for students of color. Learn more!
