Weekly Wrap-up is on a mission

March 23, 2018

We are pleased to share the following YWCA USA updates:

Leadership & Capacity Building Institute

Book your rooms! We’re going to San Antonio! Registration is open for the 2018 Leadership & Capacity Building Institute (LCBI) and we want to see you there. This year, we are excited to roll out a new microsite where you can register, see agenda updates, learn about San Antonio and reminisce with highlights from the last LCBI. Check it out!

Women of Color LCBI Pre-Session

The LCBI Women of Color Pre-Session is the launch of the inaugural Women of Color and Native Women’s Leadership Cohort. The WOCNW Leadership Cohort is a year-long cohort for 25 diverse YWCA women and femmes of color and is open to YWCA staff and volunteers. The pre-session will create a safe and empowering environment on which to build connections, practice intentional self-care and deepen concrete leadership skills. Please complete this application form to apply by Friday, April 20.

March for Our Lives

We are so excited to be a part of the incredible student movement that has culminated in the March for Our Lives. As an organization committed to racial justice, we are cognizant of the outpouring of support these majority white students have received, in contrast to the challenges Black and Brown young people continue to face when they march, organize, and rally for their lives. With this in mind, we want to offer a few basic talking points for those who are attending tomorrow as well as these rally signs which you may choose to print and carry.

FY2018 Federal Budget Deal

With the FY2018 continuing resolution set to expire on March 23, Congress this week reached a deal to fund the federal government through September 30, 2018.

Overall, YWCA is pleased that the Omnibus Appropriations Act invests robustly in critical priorities like child care, housing, nutrition, domestic and sexual violence programs, healthcare prevention and treatment, and much more. In addition, while the bill rejects the Administration’s request for billions for a border wall, does not fund the requested deportation force, and requires Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to reduce the number of detention beds currently in use to FY17 levels, YWCA is concerned that the bill includes funding to increase border security through the building of fences and the hiring of border agents at points of entry. YWCA also remains concerned that Congress has not provided a solution for Dreamers, and continues to urge Congress and the Administration to pass a clean DREAM Act immediately.

The Omnibus Appropriations Act is currently being voted on by the Senate and House, to be signed by President Trump once passed. Read more.

Get Involved in the United State of Women Summit!

As a community partner of the second United State of Women (USOW) Summit in Los Angeles on May 5 and 6, YWCA will be joining 5,000 others committed to finding solutions to gender inequality. Here’s how you can join in:

  • Become a Community Partner. USOW is looking for 501(c)(3) organizations located in California who are dedicated to women and girls’ empowerment and will commit to sending 5 participants to the summit. Hats off to YWCA Greater Los Angeles, which has already joined as a community partner!
  • Join the YWCA delegation. As a community partner, YWCA USA has an allotment of 35 tickets to share with local YWCA staff and leaders. Local associations will need to cover any related travel costs. Deadline to register: Monday, April 2.
  • Apply for an Advocacy Point of Contact spot within the YWCA delegation. As part of YWCA USA’s continuing efforts to foster advocacy capacity building across our network, we will be providing financial support for 5 local association program staff members who currently serve as advocacy points of contact to participate in the USOW Summit. We will select 1 advocacy POC per geographic network. Deadline to apply: Monday, April 2.

We look forward to sharing more details with you in the weeks ahead!

Nonprofit Leadership Workbook

The Nonprofit Leadership Workbook for Women is designed to help you develop your skills, build your personal brand, and expand your professional network. Its exercises will challenge you to reflect on your goals and record your thoughts as you take the steps you need to reach professional and personal success as you define it. Tycely Williams, YWCA USA Vice President of Development, is featured in the workbook as a contributor.

New in the Resource Library

New to the YWCA Online Resource Library Reference and Contact Center section is the 7th posting in 2018’s Today’s YWCA Data Report series: YWCA Performance Metrics: YWCA General Housing Programs. Each report presents data recently gathered from all YWCAs, including service offerings, demographics, funding sources, referral channels, partnerships, curriculums, outcomes realized, and a directory to find which YWCAs provide each service.

ACA Anniversary

Today is the anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. In recognition of this historic legislation, Catherine Beane, vice president of public policy and advocacy, penned this great blog about how the ACA has impacted her own family.
