Get Out the Vote

Election day is this Tuesday, November 5th. Let’s make our voices heard and Get Out the Vote! There are local, municipal, and special elections taking place in 2019, and it's important for us to engage our community around the importance of voting in each election..For GOTV resources, please check out our Voter Engagement Community on the YWCA intranet and visit Get Out the Vote on our website.

Help Send VAWA to the President’s Desk:
Join us this Thursday, November 7th for a National Day of Action!

It’s been over 200 days since the House of Representatives passed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 (H.R. 1585) and it’s time Senators took the reauthorization of this bill seriously. That’s why we’re organizing in a national day of action to urge for the Senate to bring this bill to the floor. Join us on November 7th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET to tell Senators that survivors and service providers can’t wait - they must reauthorize VAWA today! Look for more information on the Policy and Advocacy Intranet community soon. Not signed up? Sign up here.

Why wait for November 7th to take action? Tell your Senator to reauthorizeVAWA today!

SAVE THE DATES: Stand Against Racism 2020

We’re excited to announce two important dates for next year’s
Stand Against Racism campaign.

On Monday, January 20, 2020, online registration will open for our annual Stand Against Racism campaign, which will be held April 23-26, 2020.

Once registered, Associations will gain access to the digital toolbox and receive the details concerning programming and merchandise for Stand Against Racism.

As we gear up for both Stand Against Racism and the 2020 Census, we can’t stress enough the importance of civic engagement in racial justice work. Voting rights, Census participation, and civic engagement are, and have always been, core components of racial justice. As civil rights continue to be eroded for communities of color, it is more important than ever to support full access and engagement for marginalized communities, especially women and girls of color, in the political process.

Association Spotlight: Silicon Valley

Congratulations to YWCA Silicon Valley and CEO Tanis Crosby on their 35th annual Tribute to Women Awards. This year, they recognized Christine Blasey-Ford and hosted Dolores Huerta as this year’s keynote speaker.

“I’m deeply humbled to receive this award,” Ford said. “It's funny. I was inspired by Anita Hill when I was deciding whether to testify, but it didn’t occur to me at the time that I would be inspiring anyone else.” You can read more about the award ceremony here.

Thanks to YWCA Silicon Valley for uplifting YWCA's work of eliminating racism and empowering women!

Hearing Fear, Not Acting On It: Engaging in Conversations About Racism

Our newest episode of Organize Your Butterflies spotlights the work of YWCA National Capital Area and their workshops geared to help us as we engage in difficult conversations. This discussion with YWCA National Capital Area CEO Monica Gray focuses on how best to engage in conversations about race and racism, the significance of lending helpful tools and language to make the conversation productive and civil, and learning to hear people’s fear rather than acting on your own fear.

This OYB episode is in advance of YWCA National Capital Area’s next Courageous Conversation, “Difficult Holiday Conversations: Talking About Race and Fear at the Dinner Table,” taking place on November 7th. For more details on this event, please click here.
