Registration Opens Monday, January 20th, 2020

Stand Against Racism is an annual campaign of YWCA USA, designed to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism. Our annual campaign provides an opportunity for communities across the United States to highlight a special issue or cause that inspired them to take a stand against racism, as well as to unite their voices as they educate, advocate, and promote racial justice.

During YWCA’s annual Stand Against Racism campaign – on April 23-26, 2020 – we invite YWCAs and allied groups to organize events around racial justice issues that pose barriers to civic engagement for communities of color. Most importantly, we encourage you to explore how the tools of civic engagement can be used to advance the work of justice in your community and to empower people of color.

Stand Against Racism online registration will open on Monday, January 20, 2020.

As we gear up for both Stand Against Racism and the 2020 Census, we can’t stress enough the importance of civic engagement in racial justice work. Voting rights, Census participation, and civic engagement are, and have always been, core components of racial justice.

Four More Days to Go:
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Only four more days remain for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. This year, activists have come together around the theme of “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape,” to support survivors and to raise awareness about issue of rape as a specific form of harm committed against women and girls.

In the U.S., the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) helps survivors of gender-based violence, including access to 1,300 rape crisis centers that provide core services such as crisis intervention, specialized education, and solutions to prevent violence every year. This bill (S. 2843) was recently reintroduced in the Senate for reauthorization. Please urge your Member to take action on this critical legislation

In Remembrance
Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and communities

YWCA Central Virginia
Long-time former YWCA executive director, Caroline McJunkin Hudson, of YWCA Central Virginia (Lynchburg) passed away on December 1st. In addition to serving as executive director, Caroline was active in YWCA regional leadership.

YWCA Central Brooklyn
Carleta Harry-Diaz, Director of Resident Services at YWCA Brooklyn, passed away on November 19th at age 34. She is survived by her husband and young daughter.

“We suffered a tragic loss last week. Our amazing and beloved long-time Director of Resident Services, Carleta, passed away suddenly. She had an infection in her heart that was just diagnosed on Monday, and she passed on Tuesday morning. Staff and residents are just devastated. Carleta was such a beautiful, loving, compassionate person who was adored by everyone. She had a new baby and a wonderful husband. It’s just incomprehensible and so unfair and sad beyond reason. It’s going to take a long time for us to recover from this loss as staff and residents are equally impacted," shared YWCA Brooklyn CEO, Martha Kamber. YWCA Brooklyn is organizing a fundraiser for Carleta’s family.
