Organize Your Butterflies Podcast: We All Count! Census 2020
When the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census every ten years, it determines not only the number of people living in the United States. It also determines political representation and annual allocations of more than $675 billion in state and federal funding to communities throughout the United States.
YWCA USA’s CEO Alejandra Y. Castillo and expert guest Natalie Cone, Manager for State Advocacy and Civil Engagement at YWCA USA, discuss the significance of undercounted and hard-to-count communities in the upcoming 2020 census, the Census Bureau’s commitment to participant safety, and why YWCAs across the country are arbiters for communities that have historically been left out.
For more information on how to ensure you are counted in the 2020 census, check out Census Counts and the Official site for the 2020 Census.

Taking a STAND AGAINST RACISM in 2020!
Stand Against Racism is an annual campaign of YWCA USA, designed to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism. Our annual campaign provides an opportunity for communities across the United States to highlight a special issue or cause that inspired them to take a stand against racism, as well as to unite their voices as they educate, advocate, and promote racial justice.
During YWCA’s annual Stand Against Racism campaign – on April 23-26, 2020 – we invite YWCAs and allied groups to organize events around racial justice issues that pose barriers to civic engagement for communities of color. Most importantly, we encourage you to explore how the tools of civic engagement can be used to advance the work of justice in your community and to empower people of color.
SAR online registration will open on Monday, January 20, 2020.
As we gear up for both Stand Against Racism and the 2020 Census, we can’t stress enough the importance of civic engagement in racial justice work. Voting rights, Census participation, and civic engagement are, and have always been, core components of racial justice.
Here are two new tools to help you prepare for SAR 2020:

Elimination of Violence Against Women
Monday, November 25th marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW), a day for people around the world to join together to eradicate all forms of gender-based violence. Next Monday also marks the start of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This year, as the United Nation calls on us to “Orange the World” and to “take a stand against rape,” a multi-year campaign will kick-off, aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls. The #16Days will focus on the issue of rape as a specific form of harm committed against women and girls in times of peace or war. |
 |
In the U.S., Senator Dianne Feinstein has introduced S.2843, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA). Every year, VAWA helps hundreds of thousands of survivors, including through 1,300 rape crisis centers that provide core services such as crisis intervention, specialized education, and solutions to prevent violence.
Participate in IDEVAW and 16 Days of Activism by taking action to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Tell your Senators it’s time to pass VAWA NOW! |
