Weekly Wrap-Up 12/13/19

By Jackie Adhiambo posted 12-13-2019 06:42 PM

This week, we released YWomenVote 2020, our national survey of 1,000 adult women of various races, ethnicities, and communities to learn their specific priorities and concerns heading into the 2020 election cycle. We learned that women are highly motivated to raise their voices to advance shared personal and economic security interests in 2020. Scroll down for more details.

In this episode of “Organize Your Butterflies,” YWCA USA CEO Alejandra Y. Castillo chats with Celinda Lake, CEO, Lake Research Partners, and Catherine Beane, Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy, YWCA USA about the YWomenVote survey findings and implications for the 2020 election. Don't miss the details below. We hope you will share this over social media this weekend.

Our final Weekly Wrap-Up for 2019 is scheduled for next Friday, December 20th. We'll return on January 10, 2020. Please make sure everyone in your association is receiving and reading the WWU each and every week.

Thanks for your commitment to the work of justice. Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Survey Report Released

Yesterday on Capitol Hill, we launched our YWomenVote 2020 campaign, presenting findings from the third national survey conducted by YWCA to assess women’s economic, healthcare, safety, and caregiving concerns and priorities ahead of the 2020 election.

We were pleased to hear from Democratic and Republican senators and representatives from across the country including Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Gwen Moore (D-WI 4th District), and leaders from partner organizations: Debra Ness, President, National Partnership for Women & Families; Melanie Campbell, President & CEO, The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation; Jennifer Baik, Communications & Policy Associate, APIAVote; Erin Vilardi, Founder & CEO, VoteRunLead; and Brigid Schulte, Director, Better Life Lab, New America.

Our survey frames women’s expectations for policymakers and will guide YWCA’s largest-ever civic engagement program to bring equality, justice, and opportunity to all women, children, and people of color.

Read more about the report and our civic engagement campaign at YWomenVote.org.

Stand-Against-Racism-2020.jpg

Registration Opens Monday, January 20th, 2020

Stand Against Racism is an annual campaign of YWCA USA, designed to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism. Our annual campaign provides an opportunity for communities across the United States to highlight a special issue or cause that inspired them to take a stand against racism, as well as to unite their voices as they educate, advocate, and promote racial justice.

During YWCA’s annual Stand Against Racism campaign – on April 23-26, 2020 – we invite YWCAs and allied groups to organize events around racial justice issues that pose barriers to civic engagement for communities of color. Most importantly, we encourage you to explore how the tools of civic engagement can be used to advance the work of justice in your community and to empower people of color.

Stand Against Racism online registration will open on Monday, January 20, 2020.

As we gear up for both Stand Against Racism and the 2020 Census, we can’t stress enough the importance of civic engagement in racial justice work. Voting rights, Census participation, and civic engagement are, and have always been, core components of racial justice.

Gender Neutral Task Force

Last Friday, the Gender Neutral Task Force met in Seattle to begin important discussions about several key pieces of YWCA’s work: single gender governance, membership, and gender definition.

“Our first meeting of the Gender-Neutral Task Force was exciting! We are enthusiastic to begin this important and necessary conversation to ensure that the organization’s bylaws are within current legal requirements and best practices,” commented Elisha Rhodes, Vice President, Operations, YWCA USA.

We will keep you informed of ways you can participate and provide input during the process.

Cybersecurity Awareness from our IT Department

We’ve noticed an increase in phishing email attacks at the national office and heard similar accounts from local associations. Please check in with your IT provider/staff to ensure you are following best practices.

Phishing emails are a common form of attack where the attacker pretends to be someone else in an email message to steal funds or sensitive information. Please take a moment to review this guide on how to spot these emails.
